The Thrissur Pooram is a Temple Festival held every year on the day the Pooram Star and the Moon rise together during the month of Medam, as per the Malayalam Calendar. In 2018 it will be observed on 25th / 26th April. It is celebrated at the Vadakkanathan Temple in Thrissur City, located in Thrissur District in the state of Kerala. The Thrissur Pooram is popular for the largest collection of caparisoned elephants that assemble in any one place. These elephants belong to temples around Thrissur and include the Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple, Kanimangalam Sastha Temple, Laloor Bhagavathy Temple, Ayyanthole Sree Karthyayani Temple, Nethilakkavu Baghavathy Temple, Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple, Chembukkavu Bhagavathy Temple, Panamukkumpally Sastha Temple, Choorakkottukavu Bhagavathy Temple and Pookattikkara - Karamukku Baghavathy Temple The elephants are adorned with ornaments, Kolam, decorative bells and a decorative golden headdress known as Nettipattam. The highlight of the festival is a ceremony called Kudamaattam, which is the exchange of richly decorated umbrellas by the two teams of elephants to the accompaniment of Pancha Vadyam Melam. The Pancha Vadyam Melam is an orchestra comprising of five musical instruments such as thimila, madhalam, trumpet, cymbal and edakka.
