This festival is meant to signify the onset of summer, and is known as Basoda in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. This word is taken from the word Basi or stale, as people eat stale food or food cooked the previous day. No fires are lit in kitchens on this day and no food is cooked.
