Sharad Navaratri is one of the four Navratris observed in a year but has more significance than the other Navaratris. In 2018, Navaratri commences on 10th October and will conclude on 18th October, with Vijaya Dashami being celebrated on the following day. On the first day, Goddess Durga is worshipped as Shailaputri who is riding a bull (Nandi) and wields a Trishul in her right hand. She is considered as an avatara of Mahakali. On the second day the Goddess is worshipped as the form of Parvati before marriage, namely Brahmacharin. This form of the Goddess walks barefoot and holds a japamala and kamandalu in her hands.
