Ram Navami is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Rama. It is believed that Sri Ramachandra was born on this day at Ayodhya to King Dasharatha and his first wife Queen Kausalya of the Raghuvansha (Raghu Dynasty). It is observed on the Navami (ninth day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) of the Chaitra month, and also marks the end of the Chaitra Navarathri. It will be observed on 25th March in 2018. The story of Maryada Purushttom Ram has been immortalised in the epic Ramayana, which narrates the victory of good over evil symbolised by Rama and Ravana respectively. Ramanavami is celebrated at temples and public places by distribution of Prasad in the form of Kosumbari and Panakam. Panakam is a beverage made by adding some jaggery, lemon, cardamom to water, with a touch of ginger and pepper. Kosumbari is a type salad made using moong dal, cucumber and carrot among other seasonings.
