Narasimha Jayanti is celebrated as the day Lord Narasimha appeared. It is observed on the Shukla Chaturdashi of Vaishaka month. In 2018, it will be observed on 28th / 29th April. Hiranyakashyapu was an asura, who propitiated Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma granted him a boon, that his death would not be caused by a man or animal, neither at day nor at night, neither by hand nor by weapon, neither inside nor outside, neither on earth nor in the heavens. This made him virtually invincible and he considered himself the ruler of the Universe making him a sworn enemy of the devas. Ironically, Hiranyakashyapu’s son Prahalad was an ardent devotee of Maha Vishnu and saw the Lord in every aspect of creation. Hiranyakashyapu’s innumerable attempts to wean away his son from the worship of Lord Vishnu failed. Finally, tired of his son’s claim that Lord Vishnu was omni-present, Hiranyakashyapu points at a pillar and asks him “Is he in this pillar” to which Prahalad replies “yes”. Furious at this response, Hiranyakashyapu smashes the pillar with his mace. Astoundingly, a ferocious Avatara of Maha Vishu emerges. This is Lord Narasimha, having the body of a human and the head of a lion. This Avatara battles Hiranyakashyapu, and finally kills him. He takes Hiranyakashyapu to the threshold of the palace, places him on his raised thigh, and proceeds to rip apart his heart using his nails, at twilight. This satisfies all the condition of Lord Brahma’s boon. Lord Narasimha is neither a man nor an animal, he is a combination of both. He uses his nails to rip apart the asura, thereby he does not use his hand (hasta) nor weapons (astra). He is killed at the threshold, which is neither inside nor outside. He is held on the raised thigh of Lord Narasimha, not on the earth nor in the heavens, and finally he is killed at twilight, which is neither day nor night. A very beautifully crafted statute of Lord Narasimha, is found at the Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebidu, Karnataka.
