This festival is also called Samvatsar Padvo or Savmsar Padvo by the Konkani speaking people, who are present in large numbers in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala. People eat a mixture of Neem leaves which are bitter and Jaggery which is sweet. This is to signify that we should accept life with all its bitter and sweet aspects. Pacchadi, a salad made of neem, jaggery, chilli, salt, tamarind and unripe mango, is also prepared and its ingredients signify the six tastes of life namely sadness, happiness, spice, saltiness, sourness and tang.
