Many parts of India celebrate their New Year on Chaitra Shulka Pratipada / Padya which falls on 2nd April 2022. This year is known as Subhakrit Nama Samvatsara. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka it is known as Ugadi. The word Ugadi comprises the words Yug (eon) and Adi (beginning) and means the beginning of the eon / era. It is known as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and is celebrated by installing a bamboo pole (Gudi) decorated with a colourful silk cloth, neem leaves, mango leaves and flowers. The pole is capped with a Kalash, signifying victory. This festival is also called Samvatsar Padvo or Savmsar Padvo by the Konkani speaking people, who are present in large numbers in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala. People eat a mixture of Neem leaves which are bitter and Jaggery which is sweet. This is to signify that we should accept life with all its bitter and sweet aspects. Pacchadi, a salad made of neem, jaggery, chilli, salt, tamarind and unripe mango, is also prepared and its ingredients signify the six tastes of life namely sadness, happiness, spice, saltiness, sourness and tang. People offer worship to their Kuladevatas for a blessed new year. Bring home a mantap today, and pray for fulfillment of your aspirations.
