Baisakhi marks the entry of the Sun into Mesh Rashi. It occurs on 13th April every year and on 14th April, once in 36 years. This is because it follows the solar calendar like the Gregorian / English calendar. In 2018 it will be celebrated on 14th April. It is known by different names such as Rongali Bihu in Assam, Naba Barsha in Bengal, Vaishakha in Bihar, Mahavishuba Sankranti / Meru Sankranti / Pana Sankranti in Odisha, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Pooram Vishu in Kerala and Mesh Sankranti in many other places. It is significant for the agricultural community as it marks the commencement of the harvest season for the Rabi (winter) crop. The Khalsa Panth was established by Guru Gobind Singh on this day in 1699. The tenth Guru also administered Amrit to his first five disciples, making the Sikhs into a martial race. Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj on this day in 1875. This day is considered auspicious by the Buddhists as it is believed that Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment and Nirvana on this day.
